Industrial indoor environments require wireless connectivity that is reliable, responsive and resilient to interference, changing traffic and high device density. Current solutions can be costly, inflexible or dependent on licensed spectrum, limiting their wider adoption. The AI-Driven Architecture for Resilient and Sustainable 6G Unlicensed Radio Communications (6G-AURA) project explores adaptive and cost-effective wireless solutions using unlicensed spectrum for next-generation industrial connectivity. Building on LIST’s expertise in AI-based networking, intelligent connectivity and advanced wireless communications, the project contributes to Luxembourg’s priorities in industrial transformation and resilient digital infrastructures, while aligning with European 6G research directions focused on efficient spectrum use, distributed intelligence and sustainable communications.
6G-AURA investigates a multi-radio access technology (multi-RAT) architecture combining Wi‑Fi and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technologies for industrial environments. The project studies adaptive networking mechanisms designed to improve reliability, scalability and efficiency under dynamic conditions. It also explores intelligent and energy-efficient approaches for real-time adaptation to changing traffic and interference patterns, alongside advanced networking concepts, such as content-centric networking, to support more scalable communications. LIST leads the project and contributes expertise in architecture design, intelligent networking, protocol innovation and performance evaluation through its DISCO research group.
6G-AURA aims to support the development of low-cost, sustainable and resilient wireless solutions for industrial environments. By leveraging unlicensed spectrum and energy-efficient intelligence, the project seeks to improve connectivity performance while reducing deployment complexity and operational costs. The outcomes could support applications in factories, warehouses and logistics environments, including connected industrial systems, mobile robotics, real-time monitoring and flexible automation. More broadly, the project contributes to the evolution of intelligent and adaptable communication infrastructures for future Industry 5.0 systems.
