Integrated Models for the Development and Assessment of High Impact Chemicals and Materials
The development of safe and sustainable chemicals and materials is hampered by fragmented stakeholder coordination, limited access to relevant and interoperable data, and an absence of standardized assessment methods. Current approaches to chemical and materials safety assessment are often siloed, resource-intensive, and fail to capture the full spectrum of human health, environmental and socioeconomic impacts. A holistic, integrated approach is urgently needed to support the EU's ambitious Green Deal goals.
INSIGHT develops an innovative multi-layered framework for mechanistic impact assessment of chemicals and materials, integrating: (1) a data graph providing curated, FAIR-compliant datasets; (2) a model graph integrating computational and AI-based predictive models; and (3) Impact Outcome Pathway (IOP) graphs linking chemical/material properties to human health and environmental endpoints. The framework provides decision maps that guide users through evaluation of social, economic, health, and environmental impacts in an efficient and holistic manner. By democratizing cutting-edge AI methods for SSbD assessment, INSIGHT helps industry optimize chemical and material development, and supports regulators in evidence-based policy-making. LIST's SUSTAIN unit contributes expertise in environmental sustainability assessment, LCA, and SSbD methodology integration.
INSIGHT will support the development of EU policies on climate neutrality, biodiversity, public health, and the circular economy. It will deliver a user-friendly, open-access computational framework and toolbox, enabling industry and regulators to assess the safety and sustainability of chemicals, nanomaterials, PFAS, 2D materials, and antimicrobial materials more efficiently. The project paves the way for a comprehensive, standardized approach to SSbD across Europe and beyond.
