Emma Arnesdotter is a Research & Technology Scientist at Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), originally from Sweden. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences and a Master’s degree in Toxicology from Karolinska Institutet, and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Her scientific interests centre on next-generation risk assessment (NGRA) and mechanistic toxicology, with a strong focus on the development and application of human-relevant, non-animal methods for chemical and material safety assessment. Emma works with advanced in vitro New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), including complex 3D co-culture or organs-on-chip, and microfluidic systems, of organs at primary exposure and target sites such as the lung, intestine, skin, and liver. She has a strong interest in the use of Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) to support mechanistic interpretation of in vitro data and its relevance for regulatory decision-making. Her research focuses on the hazard characterisation and mechanistic assessment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), PFAS alternatives, and other persistent or emerging chemicals.
At LIST, Emma works within the Environmental Health group and contributes to several European and international research initiatives, including CHIASMA, PARC, SCENARIOS, and EFSA-funded projects. She plays an active role in project management, experimental strategy, and data interpretation. Emma also contributes to translating experimental results into regulatory-relevant outputs, supports integration of safety and sustainability considerations, and is involved in mentoring students, as well as scientific dissemination within collaborative research initiatives.
