Engineer by training, I also have a PhD in "Industrial Ecology", defined as the study of all interactions between human activities and our environment. This discipline is equipped with powerful tools, such as material flow analysis (MFA), life cycle assessment (LCA), or environmentally-extended input-output (EEIO) analysis. Each of these methods have pros and cons, with different objectives. At LIST, we apply them to calculate sustainability metrics of services, products, or even territories -- in order to inform industry, policy-makers, and the general public regarding short- and long-term decisions. In the Industrial Ecology group, I focus on the following topics: industrial processes (emerging technologies in particular), energy and electricity, mobility, buildings, finance, and end-use consumption. I have a soft spot for beautiful and informative scientific figures, as well as math puzzles, running, and skiing.
