About

I hold an MSc degree in Environmental Engineering (2003) and a PhD in Environmental Applied Physics (2007), both delivered by the University of Palermo (Italy). After a Postdoctoral research grant at the same University, I obtained a Marie Skłodowska Curie research fellowship at the University College Cork (UCC, Ireland), where I worked on the project CREEDS (Constraint Reasoning Extended to Enhance Decision Support). Since 2010 I work in Luxembourg, where I started as a Research Associate at the Public Research Centre Henri Tudor and I am now a Senior Research and Technology Associate at LIST. Most of the problems I have dealt with are at the intersection between environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the interdisciplinary field of Computational Sustainability. I have always enjoyed cross-fertilization among different disciplines. Therefore, I have often worked on the definition and the management of research projects where methods and algorithms coming from different areas (such as economic equilibrium, agent-based, network analysis, optimization) were applied to LCA, thus creating hybrid products that were at the forefront of the LCA domain. I have always had considerable interest for machine learning and its applications, and for all the most advanced, modern, and challenging modelling approaches. I am (co)author of 60+ peer-reviewed articles in international journals, and I serve as a reviewer for many international scientific journals with high impact factor in the environmental science field. I am also member of the editorial board of Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews and of Frontiers in Sustainability.

Mission

I lead proposals (mainly funded either by the Luxembourg atonal Research Fund, or by the European Commission) and work on projects on topics connected with LCA coupled with different modelling techniques, spanning from machine learning, to mathematical optimization and agent-based models, to name a few. I supervise PhD students for which I get funding and I enjoy working in collaboration with the very dynamic and motivated group of researcher in the Environmental Sustainability Assessment and Circularity (SUSTAIN) Unit.
