SCHAUBROECK Thomas

About

I’m passionate about sustainability research and its valorisation. A compass is needed to point us towards a sustainable future. My main area of expertise is environmental impact assessment of industrial systems and production & consumption decisions, more specifically using life cycle assessment (LCA). However, I also focus on the bigger picture by exploring social and economic sustainability. Moreover, the sustainability evaluation of nature-based systems using ecosystem service assessment is also a key topic for me. To this end, I am an ambitious multidisciplinary scientist with an eagerness to integrate and master many separate disciplines, proven by the range of topics in my works, from improving bioreactors to ethical reflections on the intrinsic value of nature. Finally, I aim to aid & empower others in their sustainability research activities and careers as supervisor and/or collaborator. CAREER: 2004-2009 Master Bioscience Engineering: Chemistry & Bioprocess technology (Ghent University) 2010-2014 PhD in Applied Biological Sciences (Ghent University): "Including man-nature relationships in environmental sustainability assessment of forest-based production systems" 2014-2016 Postdoctoral researcher & lecturer (Ghent University): conduct and support research activities (incl. cosupervision of 4 PhD students), teach various courses and aid in organization 2016-now Lead Researcher (LIST) KEY AWARDS: - SETAC Europe Young Scientist Life Cycle Assessment award (2021) - SETAC 2015 Best paper award for the paper: "Multilayered Modeling of Particulate Matter Removal by a Growing Forest over Time, From Plant Surface Deposition to Washoff via Rainfall" - Audience Award EOS pipet (2015) for promising researcher of the Flemish community
