The exponential growth of interconnected systems, digital infrastructures and disruptive technologies such as AI, blockchain, 5G/6G and quantum computing are reshaping the cybersecurity landscape. While these innovations create unprecedented opportunities, they also bring new vulnerabilities. Critical infrastructures and digital systems require advanced protection mechanisms capable of addressing increasingly sophisticated threats, ensuring trust, resilience, and compliance in an evolving regulatory and technological environment.

Mission

The Cybersecurity group aims to tackle emerging cybersecurity challenges for critical infrastructures and digital systems. Its mission is to design and deliver innovative cybersecurity solutions that leverage disruptive technologies while minimizing the risks they may introduce. The group works at the intersection of research, regulation and innovation, with a strong focus on technology transfer to fill existing market gaps. By collaborating with both public and private partners, it aims to strengthen digital trust, resilience and regulatory compliance at European and international levels.

Scope of expertise

Leveraging (generative) AI for cybersecurity solutions and at the same time addressing the inherent cybersecurity risks in AI systems (e.g., data poisoning and adversarial attacks). Example cybersecurity solutions include DL-based anomaly detection in telecom signalling networks; telecom LLMs; DL/LLM-based software vulnerability detection and repair; AI reliability, robustness and adversarial resilience; privacy-preserving machine learning.

AI-based automated and intelligent GRC (governance, risk, and compliance) in relation to EU regulations and international standards. Our research targets Europe’s main cybersecurity related regulations such as NIS2, GDPR, Cyber Resilience Act, and the AI Act,, as well as international standards such as those from ISO/IEC, ITU and ETSI. By integrating state-of-the-art AI technologies (e.g., LLM and AI Agents), we automate the interpretation of legal rules, facilitate conformity assessment and provide other intelligent tools and services.

Intersection of cybersecurity technologies (e.g., cryptography and privacy-enhancing technologies) and disruptive technologies as well as their applications (e.g., blockchain based Self Sovereign Identity, QKD key management, data space and digital twin). We consistently monitor the cyber threat landscape and engage in collaboration with public and private partners to address the emerging security challenges, such as the migration to post-quantum cryptography, deployment and integration of QKD into existing IT systems, devising solutions to secure data sharing in data spaces and digital twins.
