Projects
The mission of the Visualization and Interaction group is to design and innovate ethical, human-centred visualization and interactive technologies that improve societal wellbeing and business decision-making processes by focusing on user experience, sustainability, acceptance and adoption.
Four core underlying research topics form the basis of the technologies developed:
The group’s work encompasses technologies such as mixed reality, visualization, automotive user interfaces, multimodal interaction and large-scale displays. The group increasingly explores the use of AI across these technologies, whether this is from the perspective of automated vehicles, how people interact with AI or the use of AI alongside data visualization tools. Additionally, sustainable approaches to developing new user interface technologies are also investigated.
A central goal of this work is to improve the acceptance and adoption of new user interface technologies. This is achieved through a comprehensive user-centred design approach, which places the user at the heart of the entire process.
The group works with many SMEs and large companies to help them tackle their human-centred technology challenges. This work ranges from understanding the challenges they face and developing early prototypes, through to partnering with them to co-develop new technical solutions through research and government innovation funding. Examples of this include proof-of-concepts exploring the use of augmented reality in factories and safety critical settings, through to visualization tools to assist in anti-money laundering.
In addition, through our partnerships with leading universities and research organizations the group undertakes foundational research projects and PhD training programmes. It engages actively with the scientific community, from co-organizing prestigious Schloss Dagstuhl Seminars, through to hosting the internationally leading EuroVis 2025 conference. Group members have also been involved in other conference-organizing committees and represent Luxembourg in the development of international standards. Public outreach forms a key part of the group’s work, and it regularly engages in events such as Researcher Days and the Science Festival.
